Limit wagowy jest to górna granica jakiej zawodnik nie może przekroczyć podczas oficjalnego ważenia przed pojedynkiem w danej kategorii wagowej. Jedynymi kategoriami nie objętymi limitem są najcięższe kategorie wagowe. Obecnie w boksie amatorskim istnieje podział na dwanaście kategorii wagowych, natomiast w zawodowym na siedemnaście.

Kat. Papierowa – do 48 kg
Kat. Musza – do 51 kg
Kat. Kogucia – do 54 kg
Kat. Piórkowa – do 57 kg
Kat. Lekka – do 60 kg
Kat. Lekkopółśrednia – do 64 kg
Kat. Półśrednia – do 69 kg
Kat. Średnia – do 75 kg
Kat. Półciężka – do 81 kg
Kat. Ciężka – do 91 kg
Kat. Superciężka – powyżej 91 kg
