Brentford-based Pole, Albert Sosnowski, will get the chance to regain the European heavyweight crown that he relinquished to unsuccessfully challenge WBC champion Vitali Klitschko at short-notice earlier this year.

The European Boxing Union (EBU) has installed Sosnowski as the mandatory contender to challenge reigning champion Alexander Dimitrenko with purse bids to be submitted to the EBU offices by noon on Thursday 28 October.

Sosnowski claimed the then vacant European heavyweight title with a lopsided points victory over Paolo Vidoz in December and was lined-up to face Audley Harrison in first defence. However, the all-action Pole subsequently vacated his title to challenge WBC Vitali Klitschko in May and provided a good account of himself before he was eventually stopped in ten rounds. The Brentford-based Pole returned to action at the weekend, brushing aside journeyman Paul Butlin in the first round to improve his record to 46-3-1 (28).

German-based Ukrainian Alexander Dimitrenko claimed the EBU heavyweight championship subsequently vacated by Audley Harrison (notice a reoccurring pattern here?) with an easy fifth round TKO over Yaroslav Zavorotnyy in July. Dimitrenko has an impressive 30 wins from his 31 wins but lost his only real test on points to slippery American Eddie Chambers in a WBO title eliminator.
