Piotr ''The Wolf'' Wilczewski (29-1, 10 KO), European super-middleweight champion will defend his title against James DeGale (10-1, 8 KO) in England on 17th of September. The fight was officially confirmed by Polish fighter's team yesterday.
Frank Warren has agreed to change three points of contract. Fight will be a big chance for both fighters - for DeGale to redeem himself after painful loss against George Groves and for Wilczewski to finally impress worldwide audience. Pole's trained by Andrzej Gmitruk - one of the legends of Polish boxing, who's worked with Andrew Golota and Tomasz Adamek, among many others. His O'Chikara Gmitruk Team's one of the major players on Polish boxing scene.
Boxing show organised by NG Promotions and Andrzej Gmitruk will take place in Czestochowa on 5th of August. MMA superstar Alistair Overeem attended Sunday's press conference in Czestochowa's ''S'' Theatre, where he helped in promoting this event. In the fight of the night we will see Dariusz Sek (12-0-1, 4 KO). Undercard is full of well-known names, such as Maciej Sulecki (6-0, 2 KO), Norbert Dabrowski (4-0, 1 KO) or Aleksy Kuziemski (21-3, 5 KO), who's coming back after controversial loss against Nathan Cleverly (22-0, 11 KO) in the world championship fight.
On 21st of May in London's O2 Arena, Cleverly was hurt in the second round, when Kuziemski hit him flush on the chin with left hook. Home favourite came back strongly in the third and fourth and blood was coming from the cut above Pole's left eyebrow, although stoppage seemed premature as Kuziemski was defending himself and throwing back. It was a decent performance from a huge underdog, who took the fight on short notice - Kuziemski could be proud of himself and audience will surely welcome him with loud applause on 5th of August.
Another talented Polish cruiser, Krzysztof Glowacki (12-0, 7 KO) will fight experienced Roman Kracik (32-6-1, 18 KO) in the headliner of boxing show in Miedzyzdroje on 18th of August. Event is organised by Tomasz Babilonski and his Babilon Promotion's fighters will showcase their skills against opponents from Dariusz Snarski's stable in other fights on the night. Challenging matchups are refreshing trend on Polish boxing scene. Babilon's Ismail Teboyev (5-0-1, 3 KO) will take on Robert Swierzbinski (4-0, 1 KO), Krzysztof Chudecki (also from BP, 2-0, O KO) is matched against Ruslan Rodivich (7-2 , 7 KO), Lukasz Wawrzyczek (BP, 10-1-1, 1 KO) against Dimitri Lubachkin (18-3, 17 KO) and Daniel Urbanski (BP, 20-6-3, 5 KO) will fight Sebastian Skrzypczynski (5-5-1, 2 KO).
Glowacki's certainly very interesting pug. He impressed against Levan Jomardashvili (23-4, 18 KO) in their April's encounter. Glowacki showed good variety of punches, effectively mixing shots to the head and body. Beaten up opponent refused to go out for the fourth round. Babilon's boxer is versatile, tough and powerful, he's able to join Kolodziej and Masternak - top Polish prospects in cruiser division - very soon.
Sensational news are coming from Global Boxing's team. Polish heavyweight Mariusz Wach (24-0, 12 KO) is apparently close to getting a world title shot. Mariusz Kolodziej, the head of Global Boxing informed bokser.org about possible fight between his fighter and one of the Klitschko brothers. Klitschko's people visited our gym and were seriously interested in making this fight. It can happen at the end of this year or at the beginning of 2012 - Kolodziej said. He also spoke about Wach's sparrings with Alexander Povetkin and Derrick Rossy. Reportedly ''The Viking'' looked great against them. World title fight will be very close if Wach gets past Kevin McBride (35-9-1, 29 KO) in their upcoming clash on 29th of July.
Wach's vastly improved under the guidance of his new trainers in US. His kayo power, athleticism and confidence are very respectable at the moment. Highlights of Pole's career are still stoppage wins over Julius Long (15-16, 13 KO) and Christian Hammer (8-3, 4 KO). He also looked good in February's demolition of Jonathan Haggler (23-4, 18 KO) in Newark.
The fight between Piotr ''The Wolf'' Wilczewski (29-1, 10 KO) and James DeGale (10-1, 8 KO) is still not confirmed by Polish fighter's team. Frank Warren's announcement's saying that it's a done deal but European champion's stable is waiting for the contract. They want a refund of expenses in case of DeGale's withdrawal and George Groves (13-0, 10 KO) is also trying to get that fight.
Wilczewski vs DeGale was booked for July. It all changed after Groves' victory over ''Chunky'' and Adam Booth's fighter was offered to Wilczewski. The problem was Booth's concentration on David Haye's preparations - talks were postponed so Warren's people approached ''The Wolf'' again.
Pole's impressive TKO win against Amin Asikainen (28-4, 19 KO) in March's title fight was not an accident. Wilczewski managed to execute his gameplan by making technique a factor and showed good conditioning, gradually outworking the puncher. Fight against one the best English supper-middles can be another step forward for O'Chikara Gmitruk Team's boxer.
Tomasz Babilonski's dream has come true. After two years of negotiations, the legendary Mike Tyson agreed to come to Poland. Former heavyweight champ, one of the everlasting faces of boxing will attend Warsaw Boxing Night on 16th of September as the honorary guest. Pawel ''Glaz'' Glazewski (15-0, 4 KO) - biggest star of Babilon Promotion - will take on highly ranked Frenchman Doudou Ngumbu (26-2, 11 KO) in the headliner. We don't know for sure the names of other fighters showcasing their talents on the night, although according to unofficial announcement we'll also see talented prospect Maciej Sulecki (6-0, 2 KO), Krzysztof ''Scorpion'' Cieslak (16-2, 5 KO), Ismail Teboyev (5-0-1, 3 KO) and Karolina Owczarz, female boxer who recently starred in MapiTV's ''Todas contra Mexico''.
We don't often give pause to consider the truly sensitive and nuanced notion of Tyson's personality - dr. Jeremy Clyman of Yeshiva University says. Passion for death and destruction has gone. Nowadays Tyson's concentrated on his family and pigeons, making a living by touring the world and meeting countless fans. He regained his charisma, cementing his place as the most popular boxer of last 25 years. Recent induction to International Boxing Hall of Fame and Mike's poignant cry during the speech at the ceremony were signs of profound human victory. Victory over inner demons. Carl W. Holness - Tyson's manager - confirmed Mike's delight with September's visit. Welcome to Poland, Mr. Tyson.
Miasta (wielkie industrialne wsie) czerwonych cegieł i fabrycznych kominów, taniego brutalizmu i mięsnych ciast pokrytych węglowym pyłem. Ludzie (ponure tajemnice) surowi jak beton, toczeni przez okrutną tradycję zakrapianą równie okrutną nowoczesnością. Ten mityczny obraz północnej Brytanii wciąż funkcjonuje w świadomości Londyńczyków, choć trudno dziś odróżnić South od North. Odmienny akcent (dziesiątki akcentów!) i duża popularność labourzystów to chyba jedyne typowo ''północne'', wciąż żywe znaki szczególne. Podział istnieje dzięki wolno słabnącej społecznej pamięci, podsycanej przez wielbiące sterotypy mass-media i esencjonalne dla brytyjskiej kultury dzieła sztuki, takie jak Get Carter (1971) Mike'a Hodgesa, film absolutnie kluczowy dla zrozumienia zjawisk w rodzaju North-South divide in UK, czy British gangland culture. Oto bezwzględny londyński gangster (wielka rola Michaela Caine'a) w płaszczu od Burberry'ego udaje się do swojego rodzimego Newcastle, by pomścić śmierć brata i dać upust morderczym skłonnościom. Film poraża bezkompromisowym portretem północnej Anglii lat 70-tych, pozbawionymi efekciarstwa, chłodnymi zdjęciami Wolfganga Suschitzky'ego i legendarną muzyką Roya Budda.
Full clip, do you wanna mess with this/POLISH BOXING, one of the best yet/I'm nice like that/It's all good, in this business of rep - check out this Polish boxing revolver, inspired by Gang Starr's lyrics. It's 1895 Nagant, seven-shot devil produced for Russian Empire, used also by Polish army. These bullets hurt.
1. Stanley Ketchel (Stanislaw Kiecal) - named by Ring magazine as number six among boxing's all time best punchers. James Carlos Blake wrote a novel about him - The Killings Of Stanley Ketchel.
2. Marian Kasprzyk - one of the hardest hitting welterweights ever. So what he was an amateur.
3. Henryk Srednicki - huge puncher who was loved by Fidel Castro for his gung-ho style. Flyweight Tyson.
4. Zbigniew Pietrzykowski - the only man to knock out Laszlo Papp. Watch his fight against Clay AGAIN.
5. Jerzy Kulej - best all around Polish boxer, two-time Olympic gold medalist. Knocking out people for fun.
6. Andrew Golota - mentally flawed but very skillful. His jab's power was something else and he was precise with it.
7. Artur Szpilka - rare combination of puncher's instinct and great reflexes. Better believe that he's the future heavyweight king.
Tomasz Adamek was excluded - he's great but too famous at the moment. Leszek Drogosz's even greater but he was a pure technician. Dariusz Michalczewski's career's well known and respected. This clip is loaded with punchers who don't get enough worldwide recognition. I encourage foreign readers to research these bullets' biographies. Time to raise the stakes again.
European champion Alexander Dimitrenko (31-1, 21 KO), former world champion Ruslan Chagaev (27-1-1, 17 KO) and highly ranked Denis Boytsov (28-0, 23 KO) were interviewed by bokser.org's Przemysław Osiak about the upcoming superfight.
Dimitrenko: If it goes go to the scorecards, my favourite's Klitschko, although making any predictions of HW fights is very unthankful task. One punch can decide in this division. I am afraid that the fight will turn out to be dull. Klitschko's not brawling, he's not taking risks. He's jabbing a lot so I don't think that he will knock Haye out. Obviously, it's just my opinion.
Przemysław Osiak: Are you expecting aggressive start from Haye?
Dimitrenko: I think that he will be cautious in the early rounds. Haye's a versatile mover, throwing punches from many angles. You can't count him out - it's heavyweight.
Chagaev: I've got a lot of sympathy for Klitschko. He's an established champion while Haye's talking trash and I dont think that's it's nice. Without that PR he could be waiting much longer for this fight. I am still not sure that the fight will happen....
P.O.: Do you think that we can expect spectacular fight (if the fight happens)?
Chagaev: I am expecting either very short fight or long and not very interesting one. I don't pay attention to Haye's braggadocio. Many people talk like him and after the fight....they're just making excuses.
Boytsov: Every time I see Klitschko's opponents I am thinking - which tactics will they use? Everybody's trying something new. Haye's not a true heavyweight. I think that mental factor can be decisive. There's a lot of bad blood between them. The one who hits hard first wins. I am expecting Haye to win. By kayo.
July 2009, Hollywood. Glen Johnson and Oliver McCall congratulate Szpilka after his demolition of MMA fighter Jeremy May. They praise Artur's raw talent and ring presence. January 2010, Cracow. Andrew Golota visits Szpilka in jail, encourages him to think about ''freedom, family and boxing''. Polish former olympians, such as Wojciech Bartnik and Jan Skrzecz, once again talk about Artur's enormous potential. June 2011, Rzeszów. Szpilka knocks out unbeaten Bosnian Ramiz Hadziaganovic, executing him with ''perfectly placed short right hook''(check out article on bokser.org from 26th of June). Polish audience explodes, youngster establishes his position as one of the hottest European heavyweight prospects. Doing time and making it an important part of his image - Szpilka openly talks about his connection to convicts' closed world and wears prison uniform for his ring entrance - adds spice to the public discussion about him and allows fans to make bold comparisons between Szpilka and Mike Tyson or Bernard Hopkins. Some people portrait Polish fighter as casual hooligan while recent interviews suggest that he's a young man of very strong character who wants to succeed in boxing and in life and that he's more than aware of chances presented to him by his physical and mental ability to compete with world-class boxers. Here comes the question - is he really that good? It's almost impossible to judge a boxer after six professional fights, yet there are signs that Szpilka's not a hypejob.
Firstly, Szpilka's amateur pedigree is very impressive. Zbigniew Pietrzykowski was 20 years old when he became Polish amateur champion. Andrew Golota did it when he was 18, just like Szpilka. Obviously, level of Polish amateur boxing has dropped since the end of communism but Szpilka delivered also on European scene. He was a silver medalist of old continent's cadet championship and was one fight away from getting an Olympic qualification, losing to Viktor Zujev from Belarus, who won silver medal in Athens 2004. Szpilka's unorthodox style wasn't tailor-made for amateur boxing and his rare losses (Artur amassed a record of 102-5 as an amateur) were controversial. He was one of the most feared punchers but judges were often blinded by his tendency to keep his hands low and to look for hard punches. Not bad for a boy who suffered a lot - Artur was 4 years old when he witnessed his father's death - and who picked up boxing at the age of 15, discovered by his trainer during soccer hooligans' fight. Szpilka entered professional ranks in 2008, just after failing to qualify for Olympics. He was arrested at the weigh-in for the fight against Wojciech Bartnik, which was advertised as the ''change of guard'' in Polish boxing. Taking part in battery outside his local bar costed Artur 18 months of freedom. At least he didn't completely waste his time behind bars - training every day, gaining weight and....playing chess were his prison activities. Szpilka refused to be ''gentle'' inmate (Andrew Golota tried to convince him to become one) and joined the group of self-called ''humans'', people who base their code on disdain for ''rats'', in other words for those who cooperate with police. This decision made it impossible for Artur to shorten his prison sentence. He was moved from jail in Cracow to infamous ZK in Tarnow, place designed for hardened criminals. If you look at it closely, staying true to his hooligan roots during ''too long vacation'' seems to be important for building of Artur's bulletproof mentality, outside and inside of the ring.
Secondly, his style's a rare gem in today's heavyweight boxing. You can't teach great timing possessed by Artur, you can't teach the swagger - check out Szpilka's famous sparring with Albert Sosnowski in 2009, where youngster's finding opportunities to counter from crazy angles with ease. Szpilka's a southpaw, fighting from this stance with dangling right hand and confusing his opponent with fluid foot and upper body movement. David Haye's probably the closest comparison in HW, although - let me outrage you - David's boxing fundamentals are not as good as Artur's. Haye's also not that good mover and he's not a natural born counter-puncher, he prefers to stay on the outside and terrorise you with ambushes while Szpilka's able to stay in the pocket and pick his shots. The chasm in experience is still huge but it will change rapidly if Szpilka continues to impress in US. American audience is hungry for real talent in the division plagued by mediocre yankee fighters challenging Klitschko brothers. David Haye's promised to retire at the end of the year. Tomasz Adamek and two Ukrainian monuments (especially Vitali) will do the same in 2-3 years. ''The world is yours'' Artur. The heavyweight throne is probably closer than anyone thinks. I can imagine Szpilka moving up very fast along with guys like David Price or Robert Helenius. Often mentioned Chisora, Fury or Arreola are, with all due respect, very limited. They don't have that royal aura surrounding Szpilka. Let me tell you that I've never seen a Polish fighter as cruel for the heavybag as Artur is. Add to that speed and skills. It's so easy to predict glory for an established contender, it's so hard to do it when guy's starting. Laugh at me but be prepared to eat your words. The time will come. Bless.
Dawid Kostecki (37-1, 24 KO) added another win to his record, outpointing rugged Lolenga Mock (30-13-1, 12 KO) in 10 rounds. Fight took place in Rzeszów, headlining Wojak Boxing Night. Popular ''Gypsy'' showed improved tactical and technical approach, being able to control the fight by good movement and sharp counters, although fight was very competitive due to Danish-based fighter's experience, which allowed him to land some dangerous overhand rights. One of these punches caught Kostecki off-balance in the 9th round and ''Gypsy'' went down on canvas. It was a scary moment but Dawid wasn't seriously hurt and managed to regain his composure, fiercely attacking in the 10th. Judges scorecards were: 99-91 and 97-92 twice - all for ''Gypsy''. It was a classy display of all-around skill, yet there are still questions to be asked about Kostecki's future. He simply needs to fight better people.
One fighter who really impressed on that night was Artur Szpilka (6-0, 4 KO), coming back after doing time. His unbeaten opponent Ramiz Hadziaganovic (8-1, 7 KO) lasted nearly 30 seconds - ''Szpila'' knocked him out cold with perfectly placed short right hook. Many experts in Poland are predicting big things for Szpilka and he's recently getting a lot of public attention. His next fight will be in US, a good chance for a gifted southpaw boxer-puncher to impress American fans.
Two major fighters of Andrzej Gmitruk's O'Chikara Team didn't dissapoint last night in Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski. Dariusz Sęk (12-0-1, 4 KO) defeated solid Georgian Sandro Siproshvili (24-9, 11 KO) by wide UD in the fight of the night. His colleague Mateusz Masternak (23-0, 17 KO), undefeated cruiserweight prospect, beat Arturs Kulikauskis (7-9-2, 4 KO) by TKO in the 7th.
Sęk is not heavy-handed but his very good ring generalship and tactical awareness allowed him to control the fight with ease. Its encouraging sign of young man's surprising maturity 'cause Georgian fighter was an opponent with respectable record and skills. He tried to make it an inside fight yet he couldn't threaten with anything - Sęk felt comfortable in outboxing his opponent from the outside, often landing nice variety of punches to the head and body. In the tenth round Siproshvili went down after Sęk's hook but wasn't hurt at all and fought bravely till the last bell. Scorecards were - 98:92, 97-92 and 99-90.
Masternak's opponent was never stopped before so ''Master'' tried to make a statement and succeeded - barrage of hard punches landing on tough Kulikauskis forced the referee to stop it. Masternak started patiently and gradually builded up the good pace. It was hard to believe that his opponent managed to survive till the 7th after the amount of pain brought by Masternak. This encounter was a warm-up before autumn's fight against much better opponent. Polish fighters (especially Masternak and Kołodziej) are moving up in cruiserweight rankings and championship fights can be soon possible. Krzysztof ''Diablo'' Wlodarczyk still holds WBC belt so Poles are strong in CW after Tomasz Adamek's move to heavyweight. Many opportunities will come for them after coming up fights of Huck against Garay and Jones vs Hernandez (reportedly Jones will fight Cuban in August). It's highly unlikely that cruiser's Super Six will happen this year and champions in this division will probably take on relatively lesser known names, such as ''Master''.
IBF cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham (24-2, 12 KO) will make his second defense on August 26th in Germany against yet unknown opponent. In interview with bokser.org champion revealed that he will also surely fight in Germany in November or October.
On June 2010 Cunningham won the title against Troy Ross (24-2, 16 KO), beating him by controversial TKO in 5th round(Cunningham was down in round 4). He made his first defense against Enad Licina (20-3, 11 KO) on February 2011, comfortably outpointing him over twelve rounds. ''USS'' used his superior reach and technique to control the pace. Both fights took place in Germany - cruiserweight division is still relatively unknown by casual fans in US so fighting in Europe is more financially profitable for Cunningham.
On Wednesday last week American boxer arrived in Going, Austria, where he is helping Wladimir Klitschko in preparations for the fight against David Haye. Sparring sessions with Klitschko started for Cunningham on Thursday.
Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski Boxing Show, organised by Andrzej Gmitruk (one of the best trainers in Polish boxing, worked with such fighters as Andrzej Golota and Tomasz Adamek), will take place on 25th of June. Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski is the town where Mateusz ''Master'' Masternak (22-0, 16 KO), highly rated cruiserweight prospect and main fighter of O'Chikara Gmitruk Team, started his career, fighting for club KSZO as an amateur. June's show's fight of the night will feature Dariusz Sęk (11-0-1, 4 KO) and is a foreword to autumn's event, where Masternak's fight will be the headliner.
- In his last fight Dariusz showed that he's worth it. By beating awkward and dangerous Cuban Miguel Velozo Dariusz proved that he's ready for serious challenges. Fighting worthy opponents is the only way to ensure fighter's development so its encouraging that Dariusz is aware of it and that he's taking on challenges, not looking for easy fights - Michał Kwiatkowski, CEO of O'Chikara Gmitruk team said.
On 11th of March 2011 light heavyweight Sęk, 23 years old, outpointed game Veloso (12-1-1, 4 KO) in tactical affair, showing respectable ring generalship. Show in Ostrowiec will also bring us fights of Maciej Sulęcki (5-0, 2 KO), Norbert Dąbrowski (3-0, 1 KO), Mateusz Malujda (3-0, 0 KO) and Marek Matyja (debut). This event will take place in Hala Sportowo-Widowiskowa, 11 Swietokrzyska Street. Tickets are available on ebilet.pl.
On 16th of October 2010 Krzysztof ''Butcher'' Szot (14-0-1, 5 KO) fought to a controversial draw with Dominican Felix Lora (13-7-5, 7 KO). Ambitious seven-time Polish amateur champion will have a chance to redeem himself in a rematch. Szot vs Lora II will take place in Siemianowice Slaskie, Poland, on 18th of June, headlining Doka Boxing Night, event organised by Babilon Promotions.
In their first meeting experienced Szot dominated early rounds but couldn't control the pace of the fight due to poor conditioning, allowing Lora to land looping shots. Dominican fighter is awkward and packs a decent punch but technically advanced ''Butcher'' vows to be better prepared this time. Other Polish fighters showing their skills on the night will be Łukasz Wawrzyczek (9-1-1, 1 KO), coming back after two-year layoff and Krzysztof Chudecki (1-0, 0 KO). Canal+ will show the replay of the event.
Dawid ''Gypsy'' Kostecki (36-1, 24 KO), Polish light-heavyweight fighter currently ranked fourth by WBC, will meet Danish-based Congolese Lolenga Mock (30-12-1, 12 KO) in the headliner of 16th Wojak Boxing Night on 25th of June in Rzeszów, Poland. 39-year old ''Lumumba Boy'' replaces previously announced Alejandro Lakatos and is expected to provide a good test for popular ''Gypsy'', who is promoted by Andrzej Wasilewski.
On 30th of January 2010 Mock won European Union super middleweight title, beating relatively unknown Italian Giovanni de Carolis by close UD. In his last fight, almost a year after winning the championship, he made his first defense against hometown favourite Lorenzo Di Giacomo, beating him by wide UD in Abruzzo, Italy. Mock remains famous for knocking David Haye down in the second round of their 2003 encounter. Fight was controversially stopped in the fourth and Haye was declared a winner by TKO - English knockout artist is still the only man who managed to stop Mock. Other highly rated opponents in Mock's career are Lucian Bute and Mario Veit.
Kostecki seems to be in very good shape as he was recently preparing to fight Zsolt Erdei in US. It didn't happen - reportedly for financial reasons - and Dawid's still waiting for big fights. In the ring in Rzeszów we will also see unbeaten heavyweight prospect Andrzej Wawrzyk (21-0, 10 KO), highly ranked by WBC Adam Jonak (junior middleweight, 29-0-1, 19 KO) and young talent Łukasz Maciec (13-2-2, 2 KO). Tickets for Wojak Boxing Night are available on eventim.pl.
