SOSNOWSKI FORCED TO FIGHT IN GERMANY

Albert Sosnowski has been handed a tricky away assignment in his efforts to regain the European heavyweight title. The Brentford-based Pole’s challenge to reigning EBU champion Alexander Dimitrenko will take place on 4 December at the Sport and Congress Centre in Schwerin, Germany after promoter Universum submitted the winning purse bid.

German-based Ukrainian Dimitrenko, 30-1, claimed the vacant EBU heavyweight championship with a fifth round stoppage over Yaroslav Zavorotnyy in July. His solitary defeat came on points to the fleet-footed American Eddie Chambers in a WBO title eliminator.

Sosnowski relinquished the European title he won by decisioning Paolo Vidoz last December before he could defend against Audley Harrison in favour of accepting a short-notice offer to challenge WBC champion Vitali Klitschko in May. Unlike Harrison’s embarrassing world title effort against David Haye at the weekend, Sosnowski gave it his all against Klitschko before he ran out of steam and was eventually rescued in round ten.

Brentford-based Pole, Albert Sosnowski, will get the chance to regain the European heavyweight crown that he relinquished to unsuccessfully challenge WBC champion Vitali Klitschko at short-notice earlier this year.

The European Boxing Union (EBU) has installed Sosnowski as the mandatory contender to challenge reigning champion Alexander Dimitrenko with purse bids to be submitted to the EBU offices by noon on Thursday 28 October.

Sosnowski claimed the then vacant European heavyweight title with a lopsided points victory over Paolo Vidoz in December and was lined-up to face Audley Harrison in first defence. However, the all-action Pole subsequently vacated his title to challenge WBC Vitali Klitschko in May and provided a good account of himself before he was eventually stopped in ten rounds. The Brentford-based Pole returned to action at the weekend, brushing aside journeyman Paul Butlin in the first round to improve his record to 46-3-1 (28).

WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko is not taking any chances with his May 29 opponent, Albert Sosnowski. Even though Sosnowski is a huge underdog in the fight, Vitali is training very hard and prepared for anything that might happen. Over 30,000 tickets have been sold and a crowd of 40-50,000 is expected to pack the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

- This will be a great fight. It will be a battle. Sosnowski doesn't have a big name like Muhammad Ali but he's very tough, he's hungry and I expect that this will not be an easy fight. It will be a real heavyweight championship [fight]. That's why I've prepared so tough for this fight and I'm sure everyone who comes will enjoy the fight - Klitschko told BoxingScene.com's Misko Ceperkovic.

Albert Sosnowski (45-2-1, 27 KO) finishes his preparations to the biggest bout in his career in a sports centre in Wisła, Poland. On May 29 in Gelsenkirchen, the 31-year-old Pole will face the WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (39-2, 37 KO), unbeaten since 2003. The Pole is aware that the upcoming event in Germany is his chance of a lifetime.

- We started the last stage of my preparations. I spar with Mariusz Wach and Evgeni Orlov. Previously, I had an occasion to train for one week with David Price, the bronze medallist of the Olympic Games in Beiging. I'll give a lot of emotions to the people who'll arrive at Gelsenkirchen and try to venture a big surprise - the Polish heavyweight promises. If his shape on May 29 will be as good as his physical preparation (which is easy to notice on the photos), the fans of boxing can expect an exciting show.

Albert Sosnowski (45-2, 27 KO) doen't look nervous before the fight for WBC heavyweight belt against Vitali Klitschko (39-2, 37 KO). The contest scheduled on May 29 in Gelsenkirchen will be definitely the most difficult challenge in the professional career of the 31-year-old Pole. However, if his ring abilities are similar to the self-confidence which Sosnowski presented in the interview with BOKSER.ORG, boxing fans may expect an exciting battle.

Maciej Dąbkowski: Albert, it seems that the most dangerous weapon of Klitschko is his left jab. How will you cope with it?
Albert Sosnowski: We're analysing his bouts and tactics all along. I'm doing it with my coach, Fiodor Łapin so I'm aware of the class Klitchko represents. The fight will be very difficult. We'll try to neutralize his jab thanks to my activity and constant changes of pace. I'll have to fight very actively so as not to let him take a right position to hit me. Everything will be verified in the ring. I want to go into the ring being relaxed, with a pleasure of boxing, without unnecessary pressure put on myself. I'm working very hard which will definitely pay on May 29.

The contest will be the main event of the boxing show scheduled on May 29 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. The conference aroused wide interest among journalists who were very numerous at the hotel's hall.

During the whole conference, '71 born Klitschko was expressing his respect to the Polish opponent. - Although Valuev is taller and 40 kilograms heavier than me, he didn't want to face me. I fight against good boxers only, that's why I chose Sosnowski. All the critical words concerning the choice are devoided of sence. The criticism reminds me the situation before my bout against Lennox Lewis when everybody underestimated me. Personally, I think that our chances are equal - claims "Dr Ironfist".

WBC World Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko defends his title against European Champion Albert Sosnowski from Poland at Veltins-Arena Gelsenkirchen, Germany, on May 29. The arena is the home field of the famous soccer club Schalke 04.

Vitali Klitschko: „I am very happy to have my next fight in Germany again. The arena in Gelsenkirchen and the fans there are very special. I experienced that last year when my brother Wladimir had his fight there in front of 61,000 spectators. The atmosphere was simply electrifying. I saw Sosnowski’s fights on DVD and must admit that he is a very experienced, quick and tough opponent. He will do anything to get my belt but I promise that this is not going to happen.”

SOSNOWSKI: NEXT EUROPEAN HW STAR?

Following a near shutout victory against Olympic Bronze Medallist Paolo Vidoz to capture the vacant Heavyweight title, does Albert “The Dragon” Sosnowski have what it takes to follow in the footsteps of previous European Heavyweight title holders Lennox Lewis and the Klitschko brothers and propel himself into world title contention?

Sosnowski of course has been around a long time with 45 victories on his record, only 2 losses and 1 draw, but he is still only 30 which is very young for a heavyweight. He is also well travelled, having fought all around the world since his pro debut in 1998, the man from Warsaw has made visits to Denmark, Holland, the US, Hungary, South Africa, and Germany; as well as fighting in Poland and his adopted home England.

Albert Sosnowski of Poland, now fighting out of London, won an easy decision over the Italian, Paolo Vidoz. Sosnowski has had a long and successful career at Heavyweight, yet has until now, not been able to break his way into the big time. With his win over Vidoz, he claimed the vacant EBU European Heavyweight title, and edged his way closer to the top ten in the World rankings.

In 2008, Sosnowski scored an eighth round TKO victory over Danny Williams, which many had hoped he could use as a platform to greater things. After a draw in April this year to Francisco Pianeta, he has had to wait until now to really get the ball rolling.

On December 18, Polish heavyweight Albert Sosnowski (44-2-1, 27 KO) will come face-to-face with Paolo Vidoz (26-6, 15 KO) in a bout for the EBU heavyweight title. The fight will take place at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London.

30-year-old Sosnowski must defeat the experienced Italian if he still seriously thinks about conquering the heavyweight division. The Pole, promoted by Krzysztof Zbarski and coached by a Hungarian Laszlo Veres, was not lucky in his last fight for the EBU-European Union belt. After a solid fight, "Dragon" only drew with an undefeated Italian, Franceso Pianeta which seemed to be a controversial decision.

SOSNOWSKI NEW EUROPEAN CHAMPION

Albert Sosnowski (45-2-1, 27 KO) outpointed experienced Paolo Vidoz (26-7, 15 KO) in a battle for the vacant EBU heavyweight title which took place at York Hall in London. "The Dragon" is a third Pole who became European Champion, after heavyweight Przemysław Saleta (2002) and welterweight Rafał Jackiewicz (2008).

Sosnowski was dominating 39-year-old Vidoz throughout the whole bout putting Italian veteran on the defensive. Since the first minute of the contest, the Pole plagued his rival with series of hooks and constant pressing. Despite Sosnowski’s immense predominance in the rounds five and six, the rival managed to survive the severe crisis. The Italian gladiator was able to put some pressure on the 30-year old Pole in the seventh round but "The Dragon" countered decidedly in the finish.
